Approval in Principals (AIP) are issued for some sponsored research allowing for the design and development of research which will include activities preparatory to anticipated human subjects research. No human subject research may occur under an Approval in Principal. The expiration date of an AIP is the forecasted start date of human subjects research.
If you are still planning on collecting human subject data, an Initial Review Application for review and approval must be submitted prior to the Approval in Principal expiration date. If the research plans have changed and the design and development phase of the research must be extended, a new AIP application must be submitted with the revised anticipated start date of human subjects research activities. Please contact Research Compliance Services for the AIP application.
Please keep in mind that average processing time for Initial Review is four to six weeks. Researchers should submit the protocol application six to eight weeks in advance of the anticipated start date for human subjects activities in order to ensure timely review.
